This page is to help you understand the general care the bulldog needs.
They arent really any different to other breeds but do need care everyday.
We start the day with just watching the dogs, see if any are lame got any lumps or bumps and just making sure all is well with them, this is the benefit of keeping the dogs in the house with us we get to know them inside and out.
We then take a baby wipe and gently wipe around the eyes then with another baby wipe we clean the bulldogs nose crease, then when done we smoothe sudocrem (baby nappy rash cream) into the nose creases and down the side of the eyes to stop any staining.
Then gently check ears for any discharge and if dirty gently wipe out with a baby wipe we never poke or prod into the ear at all.
If a bulldog has a tight tail we gently clean it but we do try to breed/own bullies with tails.
Then thats them do for the day.
TIPS
The tips and advice on this website are in no way intended to avoid vets if your dog needs a vet get him/her to the vet.
We have found these things to be helpful/
Sudocrem for sore nose creases, tails and any small bites or scabs the dog may have.
Piriton (Liquid) this we keep in case of bee stings or allergies, the liquid will both go down the throat easier in case of bee stings in the mouth area but will also be absorbed faster into the dogs system. If you do give this then need to take the dog to the vet please remember to tell the vet you have give your pet a teaspoon of liquid piriton.
Lemon Juice bulldogs do not cope with the heat too well and can if left suffer in heat.If you find your bulldog gasping for breath get a jif lemon juice (small lemon shaped container) and squeeze some of the contents down your bulldogs throat,he wont thank you for it but it will break down the phlegm that can block the throat and therefore open the air ways for him to breathe, but please dont let it get that far, keep him cool and safe.
Seatone, this is available from health food shops nationwide, bulldogs can sometimes have puppy limps and or hip Dysplacia, seatone is just a natural green lipped mussel that helps bulldogs.1 high strength capsule a day is all thats needed.
Kennel Cough,If your dog does develop Kennel Cough symptoms, don’t panic! The way this illness operates is analagous to the common cold that we humans sometimes catch; simply put: it must run its course. There is no magic pill or cure, but there are many ways to treat and ease the symptoms. The goal is to support the body (immune system) while it is healing itself. Antibiotics are NOT indicated (although they are routinely prescribed and used) because this is a virus, not a bacteria. Antibiotic use is actually thought to slow the healing process. Kennel cough generally will be gone in two weeks time or less, with or without antibiotics (but probably faster without).
Here are some ideas for natural treatments you may use to treat your dog’s Kennel Cough symptoms. None of these will harm your dog in any way, even if s/he does not even have Kennel Cough, but you may want to check with your own vet before giving them to your dog.
For boosting the immune system and fighting off infection:
Vitamins:
- 500 mg Vitamin C 3x/day (250 mg for tiny dogs) (If you already supplement with vitamin C, great! But this is in addition to the regular daily dose, and is spaced out during the day.)
Herbal tinctures:
- Echinacea (give a few drops, 3x/day, either directly into the mouth or on food)
- Goldenseal (same instructions as Echinacea)
Other:
- Colloidal Silver (Give just a drop or two, 3x/day. May be mixed with food or put into drinking water.)
For directly combatting the Kennel Cough virus:
Homeopathic Remedies:
- Bryonia (give 1-2 pellets/tablets 3x/day, allow no food for ten minutes before and after the dose. Most health food stores sell homeopathic remedies in the 6X or 6C potency, which is fine to use. If you have a choice of potencies, ask for 30C, which is a bit stronger. Homeopathy works when the correct remedy is matched to the correct symptoms, regardless of the potency of the remedy.)
- Drosera (same instructions)
For soothing throat irritation:
- Honey (about a teaspoon for a small-med dog, a tablespoon for a larger dog, 3x/day)
- Eliminate exposure to second hand smoke.
- Maintain humidity in the environment.
The most important thing to ever do with your bulldog is allow him to be a dog, enjoy life runaround and just be with you, then he will flourish.
